mid century modern
A studio and clay-working school named Winfield Pottery was founded in Pasadena, California in 1929. The founder, Lesley Winfield Sample, died in 1939 and the pottery was taken over by Margaret M. Gabriel and her husband. Margaret had designed the hand-painted Bamboo pattern in 1937. Winfield Pottery moved to Santa Monica in 1946 and in that same year, the American Ceramic Products Co., also located in Santa Monica, bought the rights to manufacture some of the Winfield patterns. American Ceramic Products became Winfield China Co. in 1959 but was out of business by 1969. The pattern you see in the photos is Passion Flower, one of four of the most popular patterns Winfield Pottery produced (the other three were Bamboo, Desert Dawn and Dragon Flower). This beauty is crafted from glazed over earthenware with a hand painted melodic motif that consists of soft pink flowers and whimsical brown leaves and stems on a creamy white background. It measures 14¼” x 10¼” x 1” W/D/H; weight 3 lbs. 3 oz. In excellent condition with minimal wear. It’s a gorgeous pattern with pleasing soothing colors that will play well with most any neutral décor scheme in your home. A charming tray that will work well as a serveware piece or display beautifully atop a dresser or vanity.
