We seem to be coming upon this issue more frequently now that Poshmark has added their Boutique items. We feel they do NOT qualify as True Vintage and therefore do not qualify to share in the Vintage Share Group. If you have jewelry from the Boutique, or Vintage-style jewelry, you are more than welcome to share in our Jewelry Share Group, but please don’t sign up to share in the Vintage Share Group. Thanks for understanding.

nanasjewelbox I am very glad to see this post. I have noticed that many closets seem to use the word vintage freely, and often for things that are selling new right now. I've been wondering if I should mention it. So glad you made this nice post with helpful hints for us!

projectattic
projectattic @vibes4vintage I really appreciate your post. I have been seeing this too. I have a bit of a different though related question. What does one do about listing vintage when it’s a designer you want in that designer’s brand category? I’ve got Gucci and Givenchy vintage ( for example) that don’t get shared by our group because they’re not in the “vintage” category. “Vintage” is listed only in the title. What can I do to get them shared? Just put them at the top of the closet?
Apr 17Reply
rangerric
rangerric @projectattic That's up to you... When I have an item from a "Known" maker I use the true brand name and just make sure the word "Vintage" is the first word in the main title. If you're consistent most sharers will figure it out. I always look for the word vintage regardless where it may be and follow through, I can only hope others do the same.
Apr 17Reply
nanasjewelbox
nanasjewelbox @projectattic May I jump in? I used to struggle with that. If you are going to put them at the top, please be sure everything you want shared is at the top. I tried it this way when I first started. I cam to believe I was shorting myself shares. AND people looking for vintage were missing many of my things. When I say shorted shares, I mean because often people will share more than the required if they keep seeing things they like
Apr 17Reply
nanasjewelbox
nanasjewelbox @projectattic If they have to search for the required number of items to share they darn tootin will not go over that amount. I have found it's better to put vintage in the brand field all the time. You can put the name of the maker in the title and the description and they will be a part of the results of a search for that brand. You won't be missed. In fact my Givenchy didn't move until I made this change and in the past month I've sold several items.

nanasjewelbox
nanasjewelbox @rangerric You know, even though the shareres may "figure it out" that doesn't lead to smooth sharing and it sure doesn't lead you to more sales. There are lots of buyers out there that have a vintage style of dressing, but not being dealers will not recognize many of the vintage brand names. SO they search for the brand vintage. ANd when I share I use the brand vintage to get the field I'm sharing from. Most closets don't have all or mostly vintage so this is necessary
Apr 17Reply
nanasjewelbox
nanasjewelbox @cinthia505 You have one of my fave closets here, I never worry what is ok to share in your closet. I just love it!! In fact you are in a group of only a handful whose closets I aim to emulate. Classy, nice true vintage. I love to share your closet, I go dozens of rows down so I can see your items :))
Apr 17Reply
nanasjewelbox
nanasjewelbox @projectattic You are very welcome!! While Poshmark has certain idiosyncracies for how to reach people effectively, there are certain retail truths that transcend the platform, the most important is be accurate and truthful about what you are selling!!. It's even ok if you don't know what it is, just say so! Don't classify anything unless you know for sure. Honesty. The Golden Rule. I love that this share group and it's director have the integrity to keep the group honest!!
Apr 17Reply
rangerric
rangerric @nanasjewelbox That's a good point... still it depends on the item mix for each closet. I obviously don't have a serious issue with my mix but would still recommend each closet do some trial and error and do what's best for them... I have noticed that my items get very good (accurate) placement on google so having a correct "brand" entry may have benefits beyond Posh... (can't prove this). I think it's tough to say one way is really better than the other,,, just "what works for me"
Apr 17Reply
projectattic
projectattic @nanasjewelbox Sure thing! I’ve never misrepresented vintage myself—I am more concerned about how to deal with double categories and the nebulous “vintage” brand on the Poshmark app. Of course it makes sense for something that was never really designer or isn’t known as a designer these days to get classified as vintage when it’s over 25 years old. But New York & Company or Lilly Pulitzer from the 1990s. List as Vintage or its name brand? Those are the hard nuances of an imperfect platform.

cinthia505
cinthia505 @nanasjewelbox Oh, your kind words make my heart sing. Thank you so so much!!
Apr 17Reply
nanasjewelbox
nanasjewelbox @rangerric Yes yes yes, Google is def a factor!!! I frequently use Google to find something on Poshmark. They are pretty stinking good at it! I think has more to do with the words in your description than what you put in your brand though.Way back when I started someone told me to always put brand name in title, that is how Google finds your listing.
Apr 17Reply
rangerric
rangerric @nanasjewelbox The quality of the description (as a whole) is critical! I even hinted at that in my text (above)... but that's worthy of a full discussion board...
Apr 17Reply
nanasjewelbox
nanasjewelbox @projectattic True. I think that is why the info you put into the search field will find and produce the brand name you are asking for no matter where you have it placed, the title, description, or brand. Why don't you try Goodling a few of your listing, one done each way, and see what comes up. Or, better yet, do it for something in someone's closet that way your own browsing history won't come into play. I may try that myself and see :)
Apr 17Reply
nanasjewelbox
nanasjewelbox @cinthia505 You are most welcome! I mean it very sincerely!
Apr 17Reply
rangerric
rangerric @projectattic Just play it by ear... no "right" answer... with something that's borderline vintage and a well known brand, go with the brand, if it's an obscure brand or an obvious vintage style, use "vintage"...

plainestjane
plainestjane I hope you don't judge me too harshly for having some items marked Vintage that were a bit under 25 years. I had something listed as that that I bought in high school in 1999. 😅 I do struggle a bit with certain brands whether to use the Vintage brand or their respective brands there. I suppose I haven't seen much difference in sales, though, as long as the description has a lot of good keywords so people can find it.
Apr 17Reply
loveandsqualor
loveandsqualor I did have a pair of NWT glasses when I first started selling that were literally branded "Vintage". As in, that was the brand that was listed on the tag. Very confusing! 😂
Apr 17Reply
myantoinette
myantoinette @projectattic I generally share the items that have vintage somewhere in the description, but, if it’s buried in your listings and I’m sharing a ton of people, I will select the vintage tab. Put them close to the top (within an hour of the share closing time) and many of us will share them.
Apr 17Reply
rangerric
rangerric @plainestjane Not really an issue with "borderline" items... and in many cases it's simply impossible to know exactly how old something is.. approximations are perfectly OK

projectattic
projectattic @amorre1 Thank you! This is good advice. I know I’ve accidentally shared some non-vintage items marked “vintage” or “vtg” or “vintage vibes” in the title because I was sharing too fast. I get so annoyed about that that I’ve started, like you, to search for the brand Vintage before sharing a closet. But then I know if others are doing that, they’re missing my vintage items marked by brand. Sigh 😔 so much to consider!

projectattic @nanasjewelbox Hello again! I tried googling my listings and I come up with nothing. Zilch. Nada. I checked my settings and Search Visibility is on. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong :-/ I have pretty detailed descriptive titles, and googling some of the more specific terms like pattern names won’t bring up my listings. Any thoughts? Tia.

rangerric
rangerric @projectattic Google isn't instant... it may take a few days to filter thru the system. and it helps to link to Pinterest. Search Google Images using your Title text. I just tried one at random and my image came up the second one... won't always work that well but at least I know it's there somewhere.
Apr 18Reply
nanasjewelbox
nanasjewelbox @projectattic You know, I don't know all the exact triggers and requirements for Google to pick up a listing. I have found that some of mine are right there front and center when I search. But I have also found that sometimes I have to scroll down quite a ways to find it, and some I never did see. I supect it has to do with how active a listing is
Apr 18Reply
nanasjewelbox
nanasjewelbox @projectattic If you are serious about wanting to know how to make Google work for you, I'd try an experiment. Pick out 6 listings to play with, and share them anywhere from 0 to 10 in a day, keeping track of how many for each. And check Google for them shortly after. See how long it takes, and if more sharing within PM is required to get your listing seen. I've thought about doing this but time is an issue right now

rangerric @discountdivas18 Sizing hasn't changed much since the 90's for any known American company. There is always an issue with "Fast Fashion" items made in the Orient being inconstant or off size... and other countries have different standards... sizing conversion charts are available to cover most countries. always wise to provide actual measurements (or ask if you're a buyer) Others may offer more specific information...

We love your closet but need to tell you that the Boutique vintage items you’re selling are actually new ‘vintage’ reproductions made with vintage molds. Therefore they don’t qualify to be shared in our true vintage share ... but you are welcome to share in our Just Jewelry share that allows all types and ages of jewelry. If you do have true vintage in your closet then you would need to move them to the top. Thanks for understanding!

vibes4vintage @aestheticalvntg It’s just that a lot of items are listed as Vintage when it’s obvious they are not. My parents and grandparents went antiquing my entire life...Real, High quality antiques, so it’s a shame to see things listed as Vintage that aren’t. I could rattle on, but the Real point is that everything should be labeled and described as accurately and properly as possible.

rangerric @rensvintagepop Both "rules" work...there has been a trend (attempt) across the antique/gallery/auction house/collectable industry, since 2000, to bring all the different types of collectables under a consistent standard... the current guideline for all vintage items is 25, but it's only a guide... It's the thought that count...

fashnminx
fashnminx Hi!! I am very happy to be a part of the Vibes4Vintage share group. I genuinely like seeing the many vintage closets and sharing. If I may ask for some advice, it is group policy to share 10 items from closets participating. There are a few closets that always share the same 3 items from my closet three times over. This happens every time. I don’t know if I should send a note, just not share their closet? I am a “no drama” babe but this really bothers me...would you advise??
Jun 29Reply

rangerric @fashnminx Those folks are looking only at your items with "Vintage" as the brand... changing the brand to "Vintage on as many items as you can (where appropriate) will help... also add a note to your sign in reminding folks to look at your "Titles" as well as the brand...

applepies92
applepies92 This is so true! What some sellers don't realize is selling an item as vntg or antq when its not is setting them up for return cases being made against them. Buyers who know their stuff will *not accept an item if it is misrepresented. Hoping it "slips by" the others is unethical.I occasionally come across an item to list & I'm sure fits the category, but don't know 100%the approx.date.If I'm confident enough to list it,I just make sure to state that in my description.

Sep 28Reply
applepies92
applepies92 I'd like to add something to the list.I know it's a hot keyword, but "RARE" is way overused. It is not always rare if the person listing "heard" it was hard to come by, saw it listed as rare somewhere else(even if there are not a lot of them that you can find) or can't find information on the item easily. With the emergence of online selling sites, which are now common and mainstream, it's all about advertising. I get that, but it doesn't make it ethical.
Nov 13Reply
applepies92
applepies92 Maybe I'm wrong, and the word itself has just been watered down, or a different time brings different meaning to a word, but I still think it's important to show integrity when representing a particular market. Here's an example. Porcelain "commodes" that were common household items before indoor plumbing are antique, but you can still find them. Most were tossed, many were turned into planters, and some survived in Grandpa's barn. Uncommon find? Maybe. Rare? Probably not.
Nov 13Reply
applepies92
applepies92 And vintage fashion? Same thing applies. You can find vintage clothing stores packed with really fun items that are not so easy to come by anymore. If you find a dress made by a famous mid century designer,it might be more valuable, but that doesn't mean it's rare.It might be, but what's to say only one of every 100 brick & mortor shops carries the same dress, and only half of those advertise online. How about the Grandmother who never threw anything away, and it just isn't "available" yet?
Nov 13Reply
applepies92
applepies92 We know people do find valuable items while sourcing, and may even find a rare item now and then. It all comes down to the seller's knowledge and experience. Someone who went through a reputable fashion program, a person who has been in the business & learned through years of experience, and even a person who will thoroughly research an item, and consult with experts, will have a better idea if something is rare, but it still comes down to integrity. Most things listed as rare are not.
Nov 13Reply
rangerric
rangerric @applepies92 Agree completely... and I rarely (pun) use the word... I try to be descriptive and accurate in my listings and shy away from subjective words and phrases... (all over used) I have a personal dislike for "BoHo" which usually means "I really don't know the correct word and like short cuts..."
Nov 13Reply
rangerric
rangerric @applepies92 The other issue is that almost anything mid-century or earlier is "somewhat" rare... so the word becomes meaningless.. My feeling is that "Vintage" or "made in 1953" should be self explanatory..... (hoping for to much I know...)
Nov 13Reply
applepies92
applepies92 @rangerric 😄 Perfect! I actually have one listing with BoHo in the title. It was the first thing I listed, and a had no idea where it fit (fashion is not my main area, so this is a good example of me using a trendy keyword as an attention getter. 😲) Someone suggested it and I just put it in the description. Better watch my own backyard! 😉
Nov 14Reply
rangerric
rangerric @applepies92 "Trendy".. "on trend" is another one of those booby traps... It's just a term forced on us by the fashion industry trying to tell us what to buy... and some get so focused on whats is style where they live they forget this in a national market... what's hot in San Fran and Boston may not be the same in LA or Atlanta... and it's always HOT or COLD somewhere...
