FRENCH SEQUINED SHOE
based on a shoe by Roger Vivier (French,1913-1998)
French, 1956
Gift of Valerian Stux-Rybar, 1979
Women's footwear has embraced more variations since 1900 than in the entire previous history of fashion. Balancing function and fantasy, the great designers of the twentieth century have created some of the most beautiful shoes ever made. The preeminent postwar designer of imaginative shoes was the Frenchman Roger Vivier.
First trained as a sculptor, Vivier revolutionized the heel (he created the stiletto,"comma, and "choc") and set an incomparable standard of overall quality and craftsmanship in shoe fashion.
In 1953, Vivier joined the House of Dior, directing the shoe collection for Christian Dior until 1963. This marriage of talent--two leading couturiers-generated a golden era in which the conceptions of women's dress and shoes were intertwined. The fruits of the collaboration were enthusiastically anticipated each season and were consistently featured on the pages of Vogue.
A glittering shoe in The Costume Institute bears the ready-to-wear label, "Christian Dior crée par Roger Vivier, Paris." Consistent with the prevailing styles of the nineteen-fifties, the tulle shoe with sequins, metallic beads, rhinestones, and a stacked leather heel has an ultra-feminine look.
