GLITTERING 50s SHOE
France, 1956-1958
Gift of Valerian Stux-Rybar
Women's footwear has embraced more variations since 1900 than in the entire previous history of fashion. Balancing function and fantasy, the great designers of the twentieth century have created some of the most beautiful shoes ever made, adapting styles from the past to contemporary fashion moods.
Two pairs of glittering shoes in the Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art were designed by Roger Vivier for Christian Dior. The shoes are satin embroidered in metallic threads, with iridescent multi-colored glass rhinestones, gold sequins, and clear beads, tactfully appropriating modern materials to evoke a level of decoration reminiscent of eighteenth-century courtier's shoes. Though elaborate, the shoes remain tasteful rather than gaudy. Consistent with the prevailing styles of the fifties, the shoes have an ultra-feminine look, revealing as much as possible of the woman's gracefully poised foot.
The Museum's Glittering SOs Shoe adaptations are hand painted and come with gold cords for hanging. Wipe with a soft, dry cloth; do not use abrasive cleansers.
