Mabel Leigh “Aztec” Shorter & Sons 1930s British Art Deco Pitcher

A bowl designed by Mabel Leigh for British Staffordshire pottery Shorter & Sons. The design is called “Aztec” and features an sgraffito etched design of fish and symbols on a wash of green and yellow. Excellent vintage condition. Mabel Leigh was a young designer who joined Shorter & Sons in 1933. The Aztec design was part of a larger range she designed called Period Pottery. It was inspired by tribal and ethnic art from South America, Africa and the Middle East and is a great example of how ceramic design of this period was incorporating influences from modern art. The primitive illustrations resemble Picasso, amongst others, in their energetic lines.
