Majolica leaf plate. Stamped Etruscan.
The pink, green, yellow, teal green and brown handle are stunning. There are a number of chips on the perimeter hence the price. Would be excellent to put on a plate wall or easel.
The company was founded in PA in 1867 as The Phoenix Pottery, Kaolin, and Fire Brick Company. Majolica was made there from 1879 until 1902. By 1882, the firm was known as Griffen, Smith, and Hill (GS & H), and it began manufacturing Etruscan Majolica.
Employees were paid by the piece so they were diligent about marking their pieces. There is an area on the back without glazing where the painter-artist would write or stamp a two-digit number.
