Masks are an integral part of Mardi Gras culture. The tradition of the mask started in the 13th century when Venetians would hold celebrations and parties from December 26th until the start of Lent and wear elaborate masks to conceal their identity. When wearing a mask, carnival goers were free to be whomever they wanted to be. Mask wearers could mingle with people of all different classes and could be whomever they desired, at least for a few days. This leather necklace has a beautiful mask and is accented with seed beads representing the colors of Mardi Gras. Purple represents justice, green represents faith and gold represents power. The necklace measures @ 18 inches and is fastened by a lobster claw clasp.
