J. Edgar Hoover, iron fisted Director of the FBI for 48 years considered Martin Luther King an enemy of the state to be rounded up in case of a national emergency. In a written memo the bureau ordered King to be “removed from the scene” by FBI operatives. Two hours before Martin Luther King was shot the Memphis Police detail assigned to protect his life was withdrawn without explanation. At the time head of the Memphis Police and Fire Depart was Frank Holloman, a former FBI official, whose 25-year career with the agency included a close friendship with Hoover. The only black fire fighters assigned to the fire station within a hundred yards of the site of the shooting temporarily transferred from their post the day before the assassination. Did the FBI order king to be assassinated? Strong circumstantial evidence indicated that it did. Circumstantial evidence also points to James Earl Ray. But ballistic evidence and eyewitness accounts vindicate Ray.
