In a written memo the bureau ordered King to be “removed from the scene” by FBI operatives. Two hours before Martin Luther King was shot the Memphis Police detail assigned to protect his life was withdrawn without explanation. At the time head of the Memphis Police and Fire Depart was Frank Holloman, a former FBI official, whose 25-year career with the agency included a close friendship with Hoover. The only black fire fighters assigned to the fire station within a hundred yards of the site of the shooting temporarily transferred from their post the day before the assassination.
