Maureen Schultz (MAS Studio Pottery) Handmade Pottery Bowl

My work draws upon my experience of the world that surrounds me. As an outdoors person, my daily hikes through the Ventura County countryside bring colors and textures of nature and the seasons into my studio and work. Travels to see my children bring the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, the Texas Hill Country, and the deserts of the Southwest as inspiration. Saturated colors and deep textures are key throughout my work. I see shades of blues in the sky and the ocean; greens from fields of grasses, trees, and native plants; yellows, tans, and browns from the earth, rocks, and mountains; and purples, oranges, and pinks in the daily sunrises and sunsets. I attempt to make work that becomes both art and function, blurring the lines between practical and sculptural. I like to play with clays and glazes for unexpected results. I also mix techniques – wheel, hand built, slip cast, etc. to create what my mind sees.
