Mexicos leading arist! The first sculptures by Arte Felguerez were created in 1964 by the well-known Zacatecano sculptor & painter Manuel Felguerez (b. 1928). Felguerez was a disciple of Ossip Zadkine at the Grande Chaumière in Paris in the late 1940’s, and also studied with Francisco Zuñiga at The Painting & Sculpture School "La Esmeralda" in Mexico City in the early 1950's. In 1964, Manuel Felguerez produced 25 original, handcrafted animal designs from iron plate. In 1966, thirty human figurines were added to this collection, with the themes of sports & children playing. Beginning in 1964, Felguerez's designs were manufactured by his brother Luis Felguerez Barra (1935-2005). During his life, Luis Felguerez B. owned twelve fine handcrafts galleries located in Mexico City's fashionable Zona Rosa and San Angel districts, as well as in Acapulco. Luis Felguerez Lassard (b. 1960), son of Luis Felguerez Barra, started in 1972 to accompany his father to the family’s tienda at El Bazaar Sabado (The Saturday Bazaar) in the San Angel district. In 1988, Luis Felguerez Barra transferred to his son the manufacturing and distribution of the metal figurines. Luis Felguerez Lassard opened a new workshop in order to continue manufacturing Manuel Felguerez designs. All designs by Manuel and Luis Jr. have been incorporated into the collection of Arte Felguerez. This collection retains the themes & characteristics of Manuel's first designs, but each year incorporates new ideas and trends.
