EVENING SHOE ORNAMENT
France, 1928-33
Gift of Mrs. Lee Ault and Mrs. Ray Hill in memory of Mrs. Charles R. Leonard, 1979
The 1920s saw an unprecedented emphasis on women's shoes as they became decorative fashion items in themselves, but it was not until the 1930s that a variety of modern-style shoes emerged. These evening shoes in orange silk, with an art deco motif in brilliant gold kid, are characteristic of the time, and may have been dyed to match a woman's particular dress.
These shoes, with their open sides and mere single strap across the ankle, would show off a woman's new suntan as she dined and danced, a vogue celebrating the new-found freedom of the 1930s.
The shoes were made by N. Greece in Paris, France between 1928 and 1933.
The Museum's Evening Shoe adaptation is painted by hand and comes with a gold cord for hanging.
