@cissymatt saw your comment, the lower part is lined with a PFOA-Free non-stick coating which heats up and causes the browning. I used to be a Tupperware consultant. The lid positions 2 ways, one to press down on the food (like for a grilled cheese) and the other is elevated for larger foods that you may just brown on the bottom like pizza (or turn halfway through cooking) or rice dishes etc. I hope that helps!
