In West African tradition, waist beads are seen as a symbol of femininity. Nowadays, they are used for fashion, spiritual expression, and/or to track one's waistline. Coming directly from Ghana, these waist beads are the traditional beads and string. They DO NOT stretch. That is because these waist beads are meant to be worn long term. Once you put these on you either have to carefully un-knot it or cut the string. Each one consists of around 43-45 inches of beading and 18 inches of additional string. This allows you to be able to adjust it to your size or connect it to another string of waist beads. Any extra string can be cut off. The beads and string are very durable, I've been wearing mine for the past 5 years.
