lemurianmuse @hollygolitley thanks! I used to ride everything but most english. I just had neck fusion surgery so I probably will be limited to just pleasure riding. He is my retired show horse that I will ALWAYS keep. He took such great care of me when we were competing.

kingsroad @gigi1960 Your dog looks just like one of mine. Is he a Giant Schnauzer!
Dec 19Reply
lemurianmuse
lemurianmuse @blscheffer Yes, She is aGiant Schnauzer. Do you have one too?
Dec 19Reply
kingsroad
kingsroad @gigi1960 I do. I grew up with them, adopted one later, took my Mother's when she died... Those two passed ๐Ÿ˜ขNow, I have one that I adopted...I was his fifth home in 5 years, fostering at first, but I adopted him. I just couldn't see anyone being willing or able to give him what he needs...he just does not do well as a "pet"... He definitely has the working gene! So now, I have three minis and him.
Dec 19Reply
kingsroad
kingsroad @gigi1960 I was training him to be a PTSD service dog and he excelled at everything, instinctively an almost immediately BUT, he IS a Giant Schnauzer after all and he would be too guardy if his owner were in a full blown panic attack in public. So, I had to flunk him out and keep him. ๐Ÿ˜Š and I had to re-train him...
Dec 19Reply
kingsroad
kingsroad @gigi1960 I had trained him to touch me every 15 mins... To put his head on my shoulder when we were driving until I touched him etc (grounding check in)... To jump on the bed and lay on top of me if someone came home late at night or if there were a loud noise... Like fireworks that people let off every time the Seahawks score etc. and he went with me EVERYWHERE... Work, stores, bathroom... Enough already! Lol

Dec 19Reply
lemurianmuse
lemurianmuse @blscheffer I love hearing about others Giants. Mischa, my female is from European Working lines and extremely intelligent and very high prey drive. She excels in everything she does, but like you said, she IS a Giant Schnauzer and VERY aloof and always guarding but also a very stable temperament. She is all about work. My male is a Skansen Pepper Salt Giant and very laid back and sweet, but a force to be reckoned with if he suspects any threat. They are just wonderful dogs.
Dec 19Reply
lemurianmuse
lemurianmuse @blscheffer I think my Giants are so very intelligent and independent thinkers. I have trained Labs as Service Dogs and because this breed has such a protective instinct, I wouldn't think they would make good service dogs. Mine are not obedience machines like German Shepherds. They think for themselves and get very bored and are inconsistent with simple tasks and commands. I have also found that they are easy to teach and understand commands but it doesn't always equate to obedience. LOL
Dec 19Reply
lemurianmuse
lemurianmuse @blscheffer such strong willed dominant characters. I'm sold on this breed and all schnauzers for that matter. I just adore minis!
Dec 19Reply
kingsroad
kingsroad @gigi1960 I love Sylvia! My Mother had two of her Giants and I adopted one of her breeding bitches... She only breeds them twice. I grew up in England so we had European ones... Once, we had a suit of armor delivered and assembled... Our Giant literally guarded that thing for MONTHS. HOURS of entertainment for us.

lemurianmuse @blscheffer I just saw your comment about Sylvia Hammerstrom. Isn't she the best? Her Giants are simply the best. Beautiful and the most wonderful temperaments. My Pepper and Salt is from Skansens. My Bitch is European working lines and man what a difference. Very stable temperament but an incredible drive and worker.
Jan 10Reply
kingsroad
kingsroad @gigi1960 Yes, Sylvia is amazing. She says that if you are making $ breeding, you are doing it wrong and at her level, that is a powerful statement! You can tell a Skansen dog from across a field...I come across them at the dog parks every so often...always so regal looking

angelbritton Ginny i was reading your comments on your beautiful horse and i saw you had neck fushion surgery. I also had a horse (her name was Dakota) and i rod her through trails after surgery. I dont ride anymore as in 53 now and i had more surgery but i rode for many years. It took about a year after the fushion but i felt great. Your horse is gorgeous.
Jan 15Reply
angelbritton
angelbritton @patriciaaas i know this is an old post but your husband was wrong. I had a fushion when i was 39...im in my 50's now and that fushion saved my life. I did not have any pain after at all. Sometimes there is no choice and its a godsend.
Jan 15Reply
lemurianmuse
lemurianmuse @angelbritton I debated on keeping him after the fusion and I'm so glad I did. A few months after the surgery I thought I'd never ride again, but all is healed now. I had no choice when I elected to have it because I what severe nerve impingement. All that is relieved now. I had an awesome surgeon. The only thing is my neck doesn't move normally any more but it's worth not having those horrible nerve pains and weakness.
Jan 15Reply
angelbritton
angelbritton @gigi1960 i also had an awesome surgeon and i too did not have a choice. I had a completely herniated disc really bad. I was in excruciating pain. I am really thankful there are docs that can do such things. I stopped riding cause my Dakota got really sick. At my age didnt want the responsibility of another horse. Im sure you know what i mean โ˜บ
Jan 15Reply
lemurianmuse
lemurianmuse @angelbritton oh my yes, I totally understand that. They are a huge responsibility and so much work. Now I have a torn rotator cuff from all those years of mucking stalls. Lol! But it will have to wait to be repaired. Right now I'm so involved with training my dogs.
Jan 15Reply
angelbritton
angelbritton @gigi1960 lol! I dont miss mucking out stalls either! Im sure training dogs is much safer and still very rewarding!
Jan 15Reply
angelbritton
angelbritton @patriciaaas then i only wish that everyones can be successful if that is true. I had no choice my disc was severely herniated causing excruciating pain where i could not function at all. My arm was numb. I agree it should be a last resort absolutely! but i also say some people are fearful of surgery that would give them a life back. Thank you Patricia for your reply. I just try to be encouraging about that surgery because it is a rough one.

lemurianmuse @thirteensporks Right???? He's a moody thing too. He looked at me the other day when I was unbuckling his bridle and I KNEW what he was going to do. He bolted and ran away with his bridle half on and snapped the reins. It was a brand new Stubben Bridle too. Jerk!
