Native American Mission Basket w/ Sun Motif

Native American, Southwestern and Northwestern United States, Mission type, ca. early 20th century CE. An attractive basketry bowl that is handwoven from native plants. The broad vessel exhibits a planar base surrounded by expanding walls, and the beige hue of the vessel is decorated with a massive sun in the center, its rays created in the negative space of the dark brown band above. The early Pima baskets were primarily utilitarian – used to carry water, firewood, prepare food and store items. These baskets are handmade, woven with native plants including yucca, beargrass, and Devils Claw. The hues are natural as Native American weavers appreciated the natural colors of desert plants. Size: 12″ W x 4″ H Condition: Minor loosening to some fibers, with small area of staining within basin that transfers to the verso, otherwise in excellent condition. Great preservation to solar motif.
