Stunning Navajo polished turquoise and sterling silver ring with Incredible design! From 1950’s using the sand cast method.
Sandcasting is a labor-intensive, hand process not to be mistaken with centrifugal and vacuum casting processes. The process involves many steps, starting by cutting a stone in half and grinding both halves until smooth on the cut side. Polishing takes place in two stages. First the silver piece is polished with a wax and then must be washed again to remove the excess wax. After that comes dry polishing with either buckskin or a dry cloth wheel. And finally, stones, if any, are set. As previously mentioned, tufa and sandcasting processes are extremely labor intensive.
