Lester Johnson's traditional Navajo sandpaintings are carefully designed and made using traditional sands and minerals from the Navajo Reservation by the Shiprock, New Mexico Four Corners area.
A rainbow Yei is a figure in Navajo culture that symbolizes protection and harmony. A rainbow Yei is drawn around sand paintings to protect the painting and the person viewing it from the power of the god in the painting. The Yei's body curls around the south, west, and north sides of the painting, but not the east because evil is not thought to come from that direction. Yei are said to have emerged from the lower worlds before humans were created.
