Newcomb was conceived as an all women's institution, to provide training in the arts. The college encouraged women to emerge from their parlors and embrace one of many changes unfolding in society. Around 1895, pottery was introduced at the college, to give young women a chance of employment in a field where few opportunities existed. Over the next 40 years, more than 70,000 pieces were produced. Each piece of Newcomb pottery was hand-thrown by a master potter, individually designed, and carefully glazed and decorated. In 2006, prompted by the devastation to Tulane University caused by the Hurricane Katrina levee breaks, university administrators closed Newcomb College permanently.
