Not by Bread Alone: The Thousand Years of the French Revolution by Douglas Bullis Illustrated
This curious book consists of imaginative renderings of episodes from the daily lives of ordinary French people from the year 1003 to 1989. The author presents vignettes that include, among others, the consecration of a cathedral, a scene in the Hundred Years War, the sale of a donkey, the coming of the railroad, the adoration of the Blessed Virgin, and the disposition of a family's scrapbook. Bullis conveys a good sense of the lives of non famous persons, but there is no indication of what he has invented and what is based on fact. In short, this book is pleasant to read, but it's not history.
