This very elegant tilt hat from the 1940s' is made of brown felt. The crown is short and somewhat flat at the top, and is surrounded by a wide brim with a narrow downturned double edge. The top of the wide brim is covered with a brown veil, and there is a brown grosgrain bow at one side. From that bow there are beautiful fuchsia colored feathers to finish the look. There is a felt strap attached inside the hat, which ties at the back, fitting any head size, and keeping the hat in a tilted position.
Tilt hats were popular in the 1930s and 1940s. They were worn at an angle and held to the back of the head by a strap, rigid ring, elastic band beneath the hair, or a combination of these.
Label: NEW YORK CREATION - Adjustable
The New York Dress Institute was formed in 1941 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert as a joint venture between the clothing manufacturers of New York City & the ILGWU. The label was created by a group of well-known designers who wanted to remain anonymous & wanted to support the New York Creation label & keep it competitive with French styles of the era. The label is small, white and blue & most of the time it states the hat size…22 or 23, or ADJUSTABLE.
This is an authentic piece of fashion history! This hat is in wonderful vintage condition & has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years. Feathers, straw, flowers & veils are fragile, given their age. Mannequin not for sale.
