This two piece collection includes a 1909 Lincoln Penny and a $5 Lincoln Red Seal Note. In the history of the United States, only three dates of $5 small-sized notes were circulated with bright red seals and serial numbers—1928, 1953 and 1963. First issued more than 90 years ago, these notes were heavily circulated, and then most were redeemed and destroyed. This first-year-of-issue 1909 Lincoln Penny is more than 110 years old. It was designed by famed sculptor Victor David Brenner and was struck to observe the 100th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth in 1809. Unlike today’s Lincoln Pennies that are struck in copper-plated zinc, this coin was struck in 95% copper—and would be until 1982 except for 1943 when Lincoln Pennies were struck in steel during World War II. Dates will vary between the dates of issue on the bank note, the coin is dated 1909. This two-piece set come packaged together in a vinyl folio that includes a card that provides context for these wonderful pieces of history.
