Dixon & Son pewter teapot is 6.5" high at the top of the lid and about 8" tall at the handle. 12.5" across. Pot is 5" across. Some wear commensurate with age but still very good shape. Note there is a break in the seam along the underside of the spout. All of the parts are original, and the wooden handle has nearly all the original paint and has been repaired. The teapot dates from 1806 to 1823 when James Dixon worked out of Silver Street in Sheffield with his only partner Smith. Dixon is considered to be the "father of Britannia or Sheffield metal," which was at the time a softer and smoother form of pewter. The design is typical in that it has the rather squat shape typical of most teapots but there is no fancy engraving on the sides found in others. The feet are more elaborate than the typical "ball" shape. An outstanding example of an early pewter teapot. It has a shaped rim and a fluted spout. The teapot has a distinct impressed mark on the base: "DIXON & SON".
