I've noticed an uptick in listings of VERY FAKE Tiffany items, nearly all of which are being sold by one person-- and at high prices, too! It's a bummer to see people throwing their money away on junk, but it's also hard to identify fake pieces if you aren't familiar with the real thing. Do your research-- there is a ton of info available online, and if you can possibly visit a Tiffany store, do so! Examining the pieces on Tiffany's own site can also help. jneshops A few tips-- To begin with, always keep in mind that Tiffany makes FINE JEWELRY. This means, among other things, that: 1. Tiffany does not EVER use "crystals", "rhinestones" or other non-natural, genuine stones.

jneshops 2. Craftsmanship-- How does Tiffany get away with charging so much more than other brands, even for sterling silver? Sure, part of the markup is due to the name, but their craftsmanship is also MUCH higher quality than other manufacturers. All links are soldered smooth. All settings are perfect. All engravings are deep and perfect. The pieces are heavy because a lot of metal is used. Again, look online for guides on how to spot authentic Tiffany.

jneshops 3. Consistency-- Tiffany items are consistent in size and composition, no matter when they were made. For example, the classic bead bracelet has a specific number of beads. The chain style inside the bead items is also very specific to Tiffany. Again, do your research to know what to look for.

Ok, Tiffany has been making jewelry for a long time, so yes vintage pieces do exist. HOWEVER, Tiffany has also been world-famous for a long time, so it's pretty challenging to come up with something that isn't recorded somewhere else online.

I've also seen ppl sell inspired pieces as just that-- inspired. They do sell if priced right b/c many people cannot afford Tiffany at pre-loved prices either, and some ppl don't care if a piece is "real" or not. They just want the look. Maybe give that a try?

I would’ve been ticked if I bought a fake or even an inspired piece for a couple $$ for nothing. So, thank you for giving us some pointers on how to spot the bad apples. jneshops @1figtree it does sound bizarre if you've never heard of it, but I've come to realize that if there's a buck to be made someone out there will counterfeit ANYTHING! I collect Hermès scarves too, and there are dozens of listings for counterfeit scarves up right now. I don't see those selling at nearly the rate of Tiffany items tho, and it makes me sad/mad to see people losing their hard-earned money on junk!

icephoenix821 IKR? You know it’s a lousy fake when you can tell from a tiny thumbnail on a phone screen! What a bunch of eyesores. Another tip, anything signed Elsa Peretti has a small discreet signature because the spotlight is on her design, not name recognition like Tiffany’s mainline. And she has NO pieces that feature symmetrical hearts!

I don't know about ALL of that seller's items-- although there are many red flags all over her closet-- but I am extremely confident that the earrings you were about to purchase are definitely not Tiffany.

jneshops @prairiecv The design is not Tiffany, the hinge near the post is wrong, the "o" in "Co." is upper-case and on a design like that the engraving would not be so visible. The quality of the engraving is also inconsistent with authentic Tiffany. Hope u find something else you like that is authentic. Good luck!

hlh0904 I have to thank you for this. I carefully examined my Tiffany& Co. collection once more. I had an issue with a fake that Posh refunded my money thank goodness. I had a brooch my mother received as a gift in 1988-1989? It's beautiful, but even though it is hallmarked for 925 sterling and 18k gold, it doesn;t have the Tiffany hallmark. Its heavy weight and I had a jeweler authenticate it. Its real, just not Tiffany & Co. hallmarked.

jneshops @lexaaabear looks good to me. To my knowledge, the return to Tiffany line doesn't have the brand written on the back of the charms b/c it's on the front. This is definitely true of older pieces. I did notice an extra jump ring on the other side of the clasp from where the heart is attached, as if the bracelet once had another charm on it.

kmm1078 So I was noticing a lot of the RTT "vintage" pieces that have serial numbers. I don't know much about the serial numbering system that T&Co used and on what pieces nor could I find much info online. I have seen multiple listings on here though with identical serial numbers and that seems suspect to say the least but again, I don't know much about those numbers. Does anyone here? Were all of the numbers unique? Did T&Co keep registration records?

jneshops @lilronni in addition to the incorrect hallmarks and the shape of the hearts being off, the hook and chain on these does not look like Tiffany quality. That's something that's harder to tell unless someone is familiar with Tiffany or other fine jewelry. That may sound snobby, but it was true for me.

jneshops @lilronni another giveaway with these items is that Tiffany's silver jewelry typically photographs with a pinkish/copperish cast because they don't treat it with a tarnish-resisting chemical like a lot of manufacturers do. I've never seen Tiffany pieces photograph bright, whitish silver as copies do. Yours have that tell-tale bright, nearly white color to them in the photos.

hollyholl23 Thanks for posting this; it's great info! I just bought a ring from someone here and when it arrived, the inside stamp, "Tiffany & Co" was crooked and the 1837 isn't centered. It's currently being reviewed by Poshmark, but the seller is insisting she bought it herself years ago. As far as I can see, Tiffany doesn't make mistakes like that, right?!

jneshops @hollyholl23 In my experience, the stamps inside older pieces (1970s and earlier) are sometimes somewhat irregular compared to the perfection of the newer pieces (1980s to now). The 1837 stamp isn’t inside tho, right? That wouldn’t make sense. Everything about the outside of a piece should be 100% perfect, unless it has been damaged or altered, no matter the age.

jneshops @lindylu19 the best way to learn how to spot fakes is by interacting with authentic items. For Hermès scarves specifically— if you meant the scarves— there are a number of ways to tell real vs. fake, although there are also a lot of really good copies out there now so even if a scarf appears authentic (esp. in pix only) it can actually be a fake.

I dont find your questions rude at all. it is authentic and its prasolite so it's not a clear stone but I dont find it to be overly cloudy. myjordanwebb PSA!! When buying signature “Return to Tiffany” jewelry, the pendants ALWAYS will say “Tiffany & Co 925” on the back no “Tiffany AND Co 925” and if the font looks off to you, it’s probably fake! Just saw a fake wrap chain on here :(

jneshops @metgrl sure. Multiples of the same item for sale. Only sells Tiffany. No consistency in the backgrounds of the pix, indicating that the pix themselves are probably taken from other listings. One of the pix on the listing for a heart tag bracelet says “Vivi,” which is not the same of the seller. Only one review despite many pieces sold. Hope that helps!

houseofcolors Check out the Tiffany items Tawir2737 is selling….it’s essentially Claire’s jewelry she’s claiming is Tiffany….it’s so sad bc she says on all her items that it has no inscription or it wore off…..I have no idea why posh won’t remove those listings, I’ve reported so many times 😩

metgrl @jneshops btw, that order I placed with that seller finally came in. Lesson learned. Seller is selling fake items. Luckily, Poshmark is allowing me to send these back. The seller deleted all of her listing after I asked you to check out her page. I am definitely educating myself on how to spot sketchy sellers and fake products.

bwatson I am in the middle of a dispute over a Tiffany sparkler that arrived in knots literally and now I have questioned it’s authenticity. The seller gave very few pics. I have a feeling this is not going to turn out well and I really wanted an authentic Tiffany necklace. Can I send you pics and or can you look at post that I purchased from and give me any heads up? cameronneath @jneshops thank you for all this insight! Wondering if you can help me with my own uncertainty. I’m trying to figure out if a Tiffany Paloma Picasso graffiti necklace (the “amour” one) is real. It is on a chain that is stamped "T&Co. Ag 925" on the chain tag and "925" on the clasp itself. Do you know if Tiffany ever stamps it's chains with that?

cameronneath @jneshops Im thinking there are 3 possibilities: 1. Both charm and chain are fake. 2. Both charm and chain are legit. May have come together originally. Or it's possible that the chain is a replacement chain that orig owner had put on the charm. 3. One is legit and the other a fake So am trying to figure out what, if anything, the markings on the chain signify...
