Purchased at the auction. A description on the back of the painting states: “$5,000 Sir Walter Raleigh is portrayed probably while imprisoned in the Tower of London from 1603 to 1616. This grave, subdued portrait is attributed to Marc Gheeraerts, a Belgan artist who spent most of his life in England.
