Patricia Roberts Hand Knit Cotton Intarsia Fruit Sweater - Vtg. 1980s - Med.
Highly Collectable Hand Knit Intarsia Fruit Sweater from British Design Sensation Patricia Roberts. This is one of her most famous designs from the 1980s - One of these sweaters is in the Victoria and Albert Museums Permanent Collection.
This type of knitting is difficult and time consuming and to pull it off with good tension throughout requires impeccable expert knitting technique. It is expertly knitted by a professional.
Patricia Roberts designed beautiful picture sweaters that pushed the technical limits of hand knitting to new levels. She created her own range of luxury yarns including the cotton yarn used in this sweater. She opened her own shops in London where you could buy sweaters ready made by her team of expert knitters or purchase the materials and patterns to make one yourself if you had the skills to do so.
This sweater came from her London shop in the 1980s and was purchased by my mother who was a knitter and a serious collector of unique couture level knitwear.
The sweater has been carefully worn and enjoyed but has also been well cared for and is in very good condition given its age of 40 some years!
I have gone over it carefully. It is clean and has no flaws to mention.
It has 2 pockets inserted into the side seams. It originally had shoulder pads but my mother removed them and I honestly think it looks better without.
