Sir Tom Stoppard was born as Tomas Straussler in Czechoslovakia but fled as a child with his family to India then England during World War II since they had Jewish lineage. When Tom was four, his father died in the war and his mother married a British army major name Stoppard. Tom quit school at 17 and became a self-taught journalist and theater critic. His friendships with stage actors opened doors for his playwriting and he became the toast of the West End with his absurdist hit “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead”. After winning three Tony awards, Hollywood came calling and Stoppard co-wrote hits like “Brazil”, “Empire of the Sun”, and won an Oscar for “Shakespeare in Love”. Tom continues to write into his late 80’s and recently won his fifth Tony award for his play “Leopoldstadt”.
This great photo, taken around 2012 by Sir Tom’s daughter-in-law Amie Stoppard, measures 5x7 inches and has been signed in black ink. It is in excellent condition.
