The Dragonfly kaleidoscope was made in 1987 in the USA by Van Cort Instruments (in Holyoke,MA). It’s not a traditional kaleidoscope with little bits of colored glass, but a multi-prism that gives you 24 upright simultaneous images of anything viewed — unique only to the Dragonfly at one time. The dioptric scope was first experimented with in George Washington's time. The bell-shaped casing is made of layers of dyed birch which are laminated together by a special method. It’s signed & dated on the brass lens retainer ring (see photo).
This Dragonfly is still in (half) its original box & green foam with the gallery’s name, A Mano Gallery, in New Hope , PA, where it was purchased, and is in PRISTINE condition. The wood on this particular Dragonfly is especially beautiful.🌹
A very cool, vintage, functional piece of art.
