Incredible workmanship is evident in this rare, hand knotted (or macrame) ribbon shawl with long fringe. The piece is made in a triangular form and features a intricate knotted and woven pattern.
These shawls are sometimes described as Victorian/Edwardian or even Boho and from the 1920s. The design may be of Spanish origin but the shawls were also made more recently in South America.
Age: Difficult to determine — they’ve made these for many years, each with a slightly different design, but given the intricacy, detail and complexity of the pattern, I think that this is 1950s.
Color: Champagne Ivory
Material: I believe that it is rayon, though to me it looks and feels like silk ribbon. When first invented in the mid 19th century, rayon was called “artificial silk” and actually demonstrates many of the same qualities, but with more weight, which gives the fabric a wonderful drape and “fall”.
Sizing: The top edge measures 62” across, exclusive of any fringe. The sides measure 40” in length exclusive of fringe and the mid-point has a height of 24”. The fringe measures 16” in length. [Note ends of fringe are not finished so there is natural fraying.] See picture with diagram on measurements.
Happy to answer any questions.
Excellent condition. No evidence of spots or stains. A few of the fringes have a fine single dark thread running through them that is only visible on close examination.
