Clara Mae Stover (1882-1975) was the wife of candy maker Russell Stover, and co-founder of Russell Stover Candies. A lifelong participant in the business, she ran the company for six years following Russell's death.
Tête à Tête, by William Thorne, Detail; Oil on canvas, 1891, 40½" ×26½" National Academy of Design, New York City William Thorne was born in Delavan, Wisconsin in 1863 and died there in 1956. Like John Singer Sargent, Thorne was known as a society portrait painter. Tête à Tête, painted in Paris in 1891, features a couple engaged in a private conversation. It is an example of an American interpretation of the French Impressionist style of painting.
