This adorable pin is from the Rebajes jewelry company which existed in NYC from the 1940s to the 1950s. (It also sold jewelry country wide.) Francisco Rebajes was an artist and he brought that eye for detail to the jewelry and other items he designed*. This pin is an example. There's nothing predictable about this nervous dog. His two ears are flapping in the wind. His nose is up as if he's sniffing for danger. His four legs are going in different directions with the two back legs formed by one expect slice up the copper. One leg has been deliberately twisted, I think to show the dog's frantic movement. The coat is given texture by the hammered copper. As you can see in the pictures, the pin doesn't sit flat but is higher in one area than another, giving it at 3-D appearance. For a 2.5" piece of copper, there's a lot going on. -- The brooch is in good condition, although the pin is bent, as you can see in the picture. It's signed by Rebajes. It has a working folodover clasp.
All jewelry is sent in a presentation box at no additional charge.
*The information about Rebajes and his company is from the book "Copper Art Jewelry" by Bukholz and Kaplan
Copper jewelry became popular after WWII. Copper was easy to stylize and became popular with Beatniks. They embraced it as a reaction to the Establishment's use of more expensive metals like gold and silver.
