What Is Quartz?
Quartz is a hard, crystalline mineral composed of silicon and oxygen atoms. A semi-precious gemstone, it is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth's continental crust. The Ancient Greeks referred to quartz as "icy cold" because some philosophers believed the mineral to be a form of supercooled ice. Today, the term rock crystal is sometimes used as an alternative name for the purest form of quartz.
How Is Quartz Formed?
Quartz is easily found in all forms of rock, but originally was found within magmatic rocks. As molten magma starts to move towards the earths surface, it begins to cool down the further it gets from the core of the earth. This process causes crystals to form due to the oxygen, silicates and other elements that are present within the magma. Once the magma starts to cool down, it begins to crystalize and extend out, which then forms large deposits of quartz within the new hardened magma. When other elements like titanium or iron oxide are present, it tends to give the quartz different shades of color.
