This is a genuine fishing hook used by ancient Vikings (Kievan Rus) and recovered by a Ukrainian couple who have the very cool job of search for artifacts for a living. I waited for this piece for a long time, as they were unable to send mail in Ukraine, but I was happy to support their business. I hope this piece finds a home with someone who really appreciates Viking antiquities such as this and is proud to have so much history on a necklace!
For ancient pieces, it's important to me to, when possible, use materials that they could have accessed. Vikings used carnelian frequently, as well as a stone called almandine (a form of garnet) and rock crystal, which is essentially quartz. They also used glass beads, which they either made themselves or acquired from trading with sources as far away as the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Medieval Viking coral and clay beads have also been discovered.
Here I have used carnelian, garnet, quartz, glass, clay, and coral beads. I usually avoid coral, as I feel it is unethically sourced, but these coral beads are vintage from the 1970s.
