Undercover collectible, pure history Young and ambitious Hiroshi Fujiwara traveled to major cities around the world in the late 80s, familiarizing himself with distinct subcultures, all while reporting back to the people of Tokyo under his magazine column, “Last Orgy”. The publication acted as a pre-internet bridge for Western artistic and cultural inspiration, dropped in the hands of young aspiring creatives in Japan. Notably in effect, Nigo was inspired by NYC hip-hop with BAPE, Jun Takahashi pursued British punk with UNDERCOVER, and Fujiwara consolidated all of it in GOODENOUGH (GDEH) and his following brands and collaborations. Fujiwara and company formed the wake that countless streetwear brands have been riding for the past 30 years. Now that we have some background, we can touch on the elusive yet legendary Japanese graphic designer, Shinichiro Nakamaru, better known as Sk8thing. Sk8thing had no educational background in design when a friend he would skateboard with, Hiroshi Fujiwara, introduced him to an early Mac computer. Sk8thing translated his enthusiasm for graffiti and drawing into graphic designs, beginning his prolific career. Through Fujiwara, he met and collaborated with the pioneering minds of Japanese streetwear, catapulting him into the spotlight; a position he decided to approach with public anonymity as a masked figure.
