A beautiful & striking example of millinery fashions of the era. The beautiful color is like a garnet. This hat consists of a short delicate straw crown which extends at the back to create a cap under the brim. The crown is surrounded by a wide, downturned brim edged in grosgrain of similar color. There is also a brown grosgrain band around the crown, plus 2 orange & brown bows made out of feathers at each side of the crown. The look is completed by a beautiful matching veil.
The wartime 40’s saw a huge variety of hats that were suitable for any face shape, hairstyle or personal preference. Throughout the war and on both sides of the Atlantic, elaborate creations brightened dreary utility fashions, brought about by rationing. The only items not rationed were hat materials. Explosions of feathers, veiling and artificial flowers were popular.
Label: NEW YORK CREATION
The New York Dress Institute was formed in 1941 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert as a joint venture between the clothing manufacturers of New York City and the ILGWU. The label was created by a group of well-known designers who wanted to remain anonymous and wanted to support the New York Creation label and keep it competitive with French styles of the era. The label is small, white and blue.
This hat is in wonderful vintage condition and has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years. Feathers are fragile, given their age. Mannequin not for sale.

Is this a one-size-fits-all type of hat, or what would you say the size/circumference is?

@rose4421 Hello! This hat has a cap underneath, as you can tell from the photo. It is supposed to be worn on top of the head, not snuggly, therefore will fit most head sizes/hairdos. The circumference is about 22 1/2”. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask us. Thank you.
