This swanky black felt tilt hat from the 1940s' is a true gem...the crown is rounded at the front, then it extends to the back as a triangle, intended to hold the hat in a. tilted position. The top of the crown is trimmed with a unique red bakelite decoration, which looks like a 2 prong fork.
Tilt hats were popular in the 1930s and 1940s. They were worn at an angle and held to the back of the head by a strap, rigid ring, elastic band beneath the hair, or a combination of these.
Label: NEW YORK CREATION plus a store label for THE HALLE BROS. CO.
The New York Dress Institute was formed in 1941 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert as a joint venture between the clothing manufacturers of New York City and the ILGWU. The label was created by a group of well-known designers who wanted to remain anonymous and wanted to support the New York Creation label and keep it competitive with French styles of the era. The label is small, white and blue.
This hat is in wonderful vintage condition and has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years. Mannequin not for sale.
