SWANKY 1940s' BLACK FELT TILT HAT WITH RED BAKELITE TRIM

This swanky black felt tilt hat from the 1940s' is a true gem...the crown is rounded at the front, then it extends to the back as a triangle, intended to hold the hat in a. tilted position. The top of the crown is trimmed with a unique red bakelite decoration, which looks like a 2 prong fork. Tilt hats were popular in the 1930s and 1940s. They were worn at an angle and held to the back of the head by a strap, rigid ring, elastic band beneath the hair, or a combination of these. The New York Dress Institute was formed in 1941 by fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert as a joint venture between the clothing manufacturers of New York City and the ILGWU.
