This is a small (5 inches tall), vintage salt glazed pitcher, hand crafted by the Schmitter family of artisans. It was created in the town of Betschdorf, in the Alsace region of France and is signed in hand incised script “Schmitter Frères, Betschdorf, Alsace”. This piece was probably created pre-1960 as after that time, most Alsatian/French pottery was marked with an impressed stamp.
It is a somewhat unusual piece in that it features two vibrant colors—a cobalt blue background with bright yellow centers for the flowers which are the distinctive gray-blue of salt glaze.
It is in very good vintage condition—there are no cracks, chips, repairs or noticeable crazing. There ARE a few small “flea bites” in some areas (SEE PHOTOS), but there are small visual imperfections which seem to be under the glaze as I cannot actually feel them. This is part of the uniqueness of handmade items!
