Set of 2 Butterbeer Harry Potter mugs. Plastic 12oz. From Universal Studios Los Angeles.
Butterbeer was a popular wizarding drink that was served in magical cafes, pubs, and shops across the wizarding world. It could either be served warm and foaming in tankards, or cold in bottles and tasted like a less-sweet butterscotch. Butterbeer had a slight alcoholic content, and although was safe for children to drink, it could affect creatures (such as house-elves) if consumed in too high a quantity. Harry enjoyed his first Butterbeer in Hogsmeade.
Butterbeer is a fictitious drink created by Jo Rowling that is heavily referenced throughout all seven Harry Potter books (although there are some who believe it is based off real-world medieval precedents, such as the 16th-century buttered beer), with the writer describing it as “less-sickly butterscotch.”
Butterbeer may be based on Buttered Beer, which was a real drink. The earliest reference to Buttered Beer was from, The Good Huswifes Handmaide for the Kitchin published in London in 1588 A.D., made from beer, sugar, eggs, nutmeg, cloves and butter back in Tudor times.
