The Red Castle was the first brick home built in Nevada City. Its bright-red exterior and ornate white icicle trim served as a beacon atop Prospect Hill. Owner and builder, Judge John Williams, success in the gold mines and professional career provided the money to construct this grand four story mansion. The Williams family moved in on Christmas Day, 1860. Part of the family was Laura Jean governess to the Williams family. Laura Jean stayed on after the Williams children grew up eventually dying at the Red Castle. While other spirits continue to lurk about it is Laura Jean who appears most often. Now an inn, Red Castle remains one of Nevada City's links to the past and a reminder of the fulfillment of dreams from another era. Gently pre-loved, see all photos for reference.
