Research Note:
The Black Swan has been associated with WA since early settlement. Dutch explorer and navigator Captain Willem De Vlamingh, who encountered the Swan River in 1697, gave it the name due to the number of swans he saw there.
Western Australia, which was often referred to as the Swan River Colony in its early days, proclaimed the Black Swan its state bird emblem on July 25, 1973. This graceful bird had a special association with W. Australia from the earliest times.
