This is a gorgeous hand painted decorative plate by Japanese manufacturer Fukagawa Porcelain. Part of their Warabe No Haiku Series, by artist Shunsuke Suetomi, each limited edition collectible plate is signed and numbered. Shunsuke Suetomi is known for creating works of art that use white space to create a "Sea of Whiteness" which he felt aligned with the principles of Zen Buddhism.
Made in 1980, this 10 1/4" plate is second in the series and titled "Mask Dancing." In this piece of Japanese art, a group of farmer boys wearing goblin masks are dancing under the cherry blossom trees to ward off evil spirits from their newly planted crops. Each plate has haiku poetry describing the action on the plate. The haiku on this plate is "Planting done, we dance to ward off evil, invoke blessings on our crops." The artist recreates a universal moment in the life of every Japanese child and showcases innocence, joy and hope.
