St. Martin de Porres, 1579-1639, was a lay brother of the Dominican order in Peru. Known for his care for the sick, poor, and animals, St. Martin was the first person of color canonized in the Western Hemisphere. He is the patron saint of barbers, innkeepers, public health workers, all those seeking racial harmony, and animals. The original design, showing St. Martin holding a bowl of food to a sick man, was hand carved in wood abmnd then cast in sand with reclaimed aluminum. The medal comes with a split ring suitable for attaching it to a chain, lanyard, keychain, or rosary. Measures approximately 1.25" and weighs 1/4 ounce. Aluminum is lightweight, does not tarnish or rust, and is generally considered hypoallergenic (people with metal allergies may still experience irritation with aluminum).
