What makes this hat so expensive? What is 30X, that’s an astronomical amount of X’s?

It’s a quality rating. Generally speaking the more x’s,the more beaver in the felt. Every manufacturer rates their hats differently so it’s a sliding scale. In western hats, Stetson and Resistol are the standard. For those guys it’s wool in the felt through 3X then more beaver as you go up through to 100X. Some hat makers use hare/rabbit and finer felts are mixed with exotics like cashmere, chinchilla, and mink.

The more fur, the more water resistant, durable, and the better the hat holds its shape. Over the years the X rating has gotten watered down by a flood of manufacturers but generally, if your dealing with a reputable hat maker with rich history they hold truer to their own scale.
