After achieving great success with other fashion dolls such as Barbie, Mattel, Inc. introduced a simpler line of doll characters in the 1970s with the Sunshine Family. The company marketed The Sunshine Family as “Warm, friendly people, involved in the natural life-style of today’s environment.” Mattel first named the dolls the Good Earth Family, eventually changing the name to The Sunshine Family. This new line of dolls reflected a time in American history when families were rationing because of the 1973 oil crisis while also having a new concern for the environment, with the first Earth Day occurring in 1970. Mattel released The Sunshine Family doll set in 1974 as a package of three dolls: father Steve, mother Stephie, and baby Sweets Sunshine. The dolls represented a tight family unit, with the box proclaiming, “Doing things together & with you!”
This listing is for Grandparents. The box still has the original price stickers on it, which I think is a cool detail. However, for the right doll collector, these could be an exciting and unique addition!
