LeRoy Neiman Limited Edition THE AMERICAN STOCK EXCHANGE – 1986
The serigraph of THE AMERICAN STOCK EXCHANGE is one of the most sought after serigraphs by Neiman. The retail priced today sells for $9,000. This post card however sells for much less!
To capture the sweep and vitality of the American Stock Exchange, LeRoy Neiman placed himself in the middle of the action- the vantage point of his best work. As Neiman began sketching, traders, specialists and runners gathered around excitedly, almost stopping trading on the floor. The resulting serigraph seems to tingle with the excitement of the moment. One trader intently studies a new report, a pencil clenched in his teeth, while others coolly discuss a slight shift in the market. Specialist clerks communicate with the gallery above through a series of frantic hand signals, just as they have for decades, and the floor is littered with the detritus of a thousand trades. But this is a modern-day exchange, too. The jacket colors are not incidental. Each represents a different group: orange for spread brokers, light green for post supervisors, maroon for specialists, one shade of light blue for Dean Witter and another for Shearson, bright yellow for Merrill Lynch, and so forth. Badges, too, tell a story. For example, a red badge permits one to trade options and a dark blue badge covers all transactions. The world's great commercial marketplaces have inspired several of LeRoy Neiman's most popular works
