Gorgeous and remarkable mid-century statuette, unmarked but likely made in Japan, depicting a Chinese nobleman in traditional costume.
It is lusterware, which is a porcelain treatment giving the glaze a very high sheen for a super glossy effect, and most of the time making the clear-colored areas look iridescent mother-of-pearlish, which is the case here.
I don’t know what the gold character painted twice on the base means, but assuming it’s common Chinese (that would be Mandarin), it should be 大 (dà),which means “big”, “great”, “at a high degree” (here it’s written upside down, readable from the point of view of the figurine itself, I guess!). I looked into Japanese characters, hiragana and katakana, but didn’t find anything. This 大 dà character is one of the most common / basic ideograms in China, which leads me to think that’s what it is. If you are savvier than I am in this field (which shouldn’t be too difficult), then please feel free to share your insight with me.
Overall, a great, powerful piece that definitely reflects this kind of extravagant, whimsical, baroque aesthetic en vogue in the 1950s / 1960s (in parallel with the other, minimalistic, streamlined classic mid-century Modernist aesthetic of that time), which is generally called Hollywood Regency.
Pristine vintage condition, looks like it’s new.
