Just before his sixth birthday Rudyard and his sister were sent to England to receive their formal education. At the age of sixteen he returned to India and worked as a journalist on a local newspaper. In 1886 his first book, <i>Departmental Ditties</i>, was published, and during the years that followed he had success with many more books including, in 1889, <i> The Jungle Book.</i> He married in 1891 and settled for a while in the US, however he then returned to England and from there moved to South Africa.
