The Story of the Christmas Guest as retold by Helen Steiner Rice "The Story of the Christmas Guest" by Helen Steiner Rice is a beautiful 4 1/2 inch by 7 1/2 inch hardback book which would make a wonderful Christmas Stocking stuffer gift. The original story of "Martin the Cobbler" by Leo Tolstoy has been condensed into 28 pages of rhyming poetry. The print is rather large and could be read by partially sighted individuals. Each page of poetry is decorated with red and green two color Christmas drawings. While I think this version of Tolstoy's work is rather superficial, the author - Helen Steiner Rice, delivers the essence of the original story in her own poetic style. This poetic version can be read in 5 minutes and would make a wonderful short Christmas Holiday reading in a classroom. These pages could be memorized with a little effort and could be presented as part of a Christmas program in a school, civic organization or Sunday School. While a slight bit superficial, I would heartily recommend this beautiful poetic story which can still bring tears to my eyes. Holiday Christianity Children BKNK
