The decoration of this thousand-flower vase juxtaposes hundreds of chrysanthemums, peonies, morning glories, roses, lotuses, magnolias, irises, asters, etc. The exact characteristics of these flowers, but also their volume and their slightly shaded colors, are rendered with a keen sense of observation. The final effect is virtuoso.
This vase uses a palette called famille rose in Europe. It is characterized by the use of a pigment derived from "Cassius purple", a gold chloride, which allows the obtaining of the pink color, mastered for the first time in China at the turn of the 18th century. Other pigments were used at the time to render the colors of the various flowers and leaves: lead antimoniate yellow, copper oxide green, cobalt blue, etc. Each family of enamels must be fired at a particular temperature. This vase has therefore undergone several firings. Its success is a real feat on the technical level. Each color is perfect. This is a piece produced by the imperial workshops; it bears the mark of the Qianlong Emperor (1736-1795) on its base.
In China, each variety of flowers is associated with a symbolism, which can vary depending on the context. The peony is particularly associated with the notion of wealth and spring, the lotus with purity and summer, etc. The name "thousand flowers" given to this vase refers to an expression used in Europe to describe the decoration of certain Renaissance fabrics and tapestries.
