As a work of commercial art, it might have been the most perfect vehicle the SEPTA logo ever found. The token felt sleek in your hand, & the copper stripe across the silver background was more visually satisfying than any United States coin ever minted!
While tokens had been a thing in Philadelphia since the 19th century, their modern iteration was 1st introduced by SEPTA in 1968 & originally intended for use by schoolchildren. SEPTA was last major municipal transit system to use tokens in United States.
SEPTA stop selling tokens to riders on April 30th 2016
If you’re really feeling nostalgic, there are several local businesses that are turning tokens into jewelry.
They’re mine from school days in the 70’s
