The tradition of the Venetian Carnival Mask started in the 13th century when Venetians would hold celebrations and parties from December 26th until the start of Lent and wear elaborate masks to conceal their identity. These parties were the only time when the lower and upper classes mingled together. Imagine the shenanigans that ensued. These masks are certainly not from the 13th century, but they are hand-crafted from papier-mache and hand-painted in the traditional manner.
The Columbina, or half mask, was designed for a particular actress in the Commedia dell’arte who believed she was too beautiful too have her face fully covered. Imagine. Our Columbina is in varying shades of green with black detail and gold sparkle highlights. She wears a flower of green feathers. Her ribbon ties are green.
